Story behind the song
You wake up one morning and realise that you have gone beyond the point of no return. When you can't go back , you must go forward . A foreigner in a foreign country . A stranger in a strange land . You realise that you have nothing and you are nothing , so a change must bed made . A new life must start . It must start now , right here ... and there will be a price to pay .
Lyrics
I SUPPOSE This cannot be happening , I'm thirty nine years old , I've been writing this song now , since I was thirty four , and this is not my place , and that is not my chair , This could be New York or London ,this could be anywhere , And will this song be my disciple ? Well , I guess God only knows. But , It's got to start somewhere , I suppose. I'm like the candle on this table , that has not started to burn , Like a ship out in the storm , beyond the point of no return , When it's too late to turn around , you just have to soldier on , And see how far that you can take it , before everything is gone , You've got to stand up , like a man , and be ready for the blows , But , it's gotta start somewhere , I suppose. Refrain : I suppose I could have been anything I wanted , Like a Teacher or a Doctor or a Priest , And I suppose I could have been a little bit easier on myself , But when you're too far gone, you just have to keep going so , it's gotta start somewhere , I suppose. I wrote this song at someone else’s table , with somebody else’s pen , On somebody else’s paper , I just had to try again , To tell you what can happen to a stranger, when he's far away from home About how a man can get so lost , that there's no place to call his own , But then a man is still a man as long as he's wearing his own clothes , Now , it's got to start somewhere , I suppose. Refrain.
